It’s SOCKtober!

* As of October 10th, we have collected 180 new pairs of socks!

Did you know that there are 600,000 people without a home on any given night in the United States?  And did you know that every day people spend $600,000 on the FREE internet game Candy Crush Saga?

This October, members of G.A.P. (God's Awesome People Youth Group), will join forces with Soul Pancake and Kid President.  In his latest online video, Kid President is calling out to us all to take back the Internet and do something AWESOME with it. He shares some pretty interesting facts about how we use the Internet today and announces a movement called ‘Socktober.‘ He’s challenging 1 million people to help the homeless in their neighborhoods in the month of October. Mission Accepted -- We’re on board here at St. James!

Please consider donating a pair of new socks and dropping them in the collection bins in Centennial Hall, the Narthex or the Church Office.

It’s that simple. We WILL be part of the 1 million!

NEXT MONTH: Undie Sunday! Stay tuned!

P.S.: If you haven’t seen Kid President in action before, check him out – www.kidpresident.com. He really does embody the message of AWESOME! This entertaining video really will make you stop and think of how much time is spent online these days and what kind of impact this has in daily life.

Adventures of FLAT JESUS

With over 500 people “liking” our Flat Jesus page on Facebook, 5,000 people being reached by the postings, pictures, and stories, our Adventures of Flat Jesus seems to have turned into a national movement.  At least a small one!

Since June 17th when Flat Jesus debuted distributing carnations to the men after the worship service on Father’s Day, we have mailed out over 200 Flat Jesus (Jesi?) to folks around the country, and even a few in England, Scotland, and Canada. A recent increase in interest in our Flat Jesus stems from an article posted about us by the Episcopal News Service.  You can read it online at:

An Episcopal blogger and priest from Delaware has posted several pieces about her travels with Flat Jesus at:

You should check it out!  Copies of these articles are available at the church (in Centennial Hall and the Narthex).

Flat Jesus began as a way for us at St. James to remain connected over the summer as folks travelled and were unable to make it to church here every Sunday.  Our hope was that folks would take their Flat Jesus up to the cabin, on the road trip with them to visit friends and family, out to dinner, on mission trips, or just hanging around the house.  We encouraged people to take pictures of their Flat Jesus and talk with each other about what Flat Jesus would think about what happened that day. People have posted their pictures to the Facebook page, or emailed them to us, and we’ve copied many of those pictures and shared them on the map by the Chester Street entrance.  We’re moving this map to the gallery to give us even more room to post the adventures of Flat Jesus around the world!

It’s not too late to join the Flat Jesus movement!  Even if you’re not planning on going anywhere this summer, he’s nice to just have by your side, day in and day out!

How to create your very own Flat Jesus

Be sure to get your own Flat Jesus and carry him along on your adventures. Then share your experiences by taking photos and send them to chris@stjamesbirmingham.org or to FLAT JESUS’ facebook page: www.facebook.com/stjamesflatjesus. This is a great conversation-starter, so tell everyone about what you and FLAT JESUS have experienced!

To get your own FLAT JESUS contact Pastor Chris Gannon at 248.644.0820 at ext. 7203 or at chris@stjamesbirmingham.org
